The latter used cade oil, obtained by heating juniper wood: it was used to wash the dead. In Antiquity and the Middle Ages, juniper was used as a panacea, its fumigations were reputed to be disinfectant (notably used in the streets to combat epidemics of plague and cholera) and »juniper wine« had diuretic properties.
